How to Use Software in Your Business Today
Building software has become more accessible than ever. With modern development tools and AI, it's possible to turn an idea into a working application in remarkably little time.
But knowing how to build something doesn't necessarily mean you've identified everything that could be achieved by building it.
Through my experience designing and delivering production systems across different industries, I've learned to approach business challenges through three questions:
1. What is the business trying to achieve?
Before discussing features or technology, I want to understand where the organisation is heading. What are its objectives, and what new opportunities is it looking to pursue?
2. How does the business operate today?
Understanding the people, processes and systems behind an organisation reveals how its work actually gets done. It also helps identify existing capabilities that could be improved, connected or built upon.
3. What's preventing the business from getting there?
The final question connects its ambitions to its current operations. Where are the limitations, and what needs to change for the business to move forward?
Exploring What's Possible
These three questions give us a shared understanding of where the business stands and where it wants to go. From that starting point, we can explore how technology might help achieve its ambitions and what new opportunities could become possible along the way.
For example, introducing a new reporting system could do more than improve how information is collected and presented. It could also create opportunities for client-facing insights, new services or better connections between different parts of the business.
This is where I believe real-world engineering experience matters. By combining an understanding of the business with knowledge of what's technically possible, we can evaluate opportunities and determine how to turn them into reliable, practical solutions.
New tools give us more possibilities. The opportunity is in using them to achieve our goals and discover what else we can accomplish.
That's the approach I bring with StartUp Media: helping organisations unlock new capabilities, strengthen operational reliability and support growth through thoughtfully designed software systems.
